Exiled Yemen president goes to UAE as port attack looms

Battle for Yemen's biggest port under way

The two countries also vowed to distribute urgently-needed food supplies and to supply hospitals in Hodeida with medical equipment and staff. Officials from Saudi Arabia and the UAE also said the countries would work to ensure electricity continues to flow to Yemeni homes, hospitals and the port in Hodeida.

United Nations spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at United Nations headquarters in NY on Wednesday that aid partners are delivering 70,000 rapid response kits to "humanitarian service points" in and around Hodeida for newly displaced families.

One of those warnings came from the UN Children's Fund UNICEF which said any attack on Hodeida would deepen one of the world's worst malnutrition crises and put the lives of an estimated 300,000 children at risk.

The U.N. Security Council will hold an emergency meeting Thursday on the Saudi-led coalition's offensive against Yemen's rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida.

"Without fuel, critical for water pumping, people's access to drinking water will shrink further, leading to even more cases of acute watery diarrhoea and cholera, both of which can be deadly for small children", she added.

Gunfire has erupted near Yemen's port city of Hodeida as a Saudi-led coalition's deadline expired for Shiite rebels there to withdraw.

Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and a bloc of other countries intervened the following year with the goal of restoring the government to power.

The EU is expecting her to have made progress by a summit in June and both sides want to reach a deal by October. The pound traded higher against the euro and the dollar after the votes.

He said that if the port were to close for any period of time, or "not to operate effectively, the consequences in humanitarian terms would be catastrophic".

On the second day of an offensive to capture the strategic harbour, soldiers took the town of Nakhila 12 miles south of Hodeida International Airport, according to the government-run SABA news agency.

Over 10,000 people have been killed in Yemen's civil war.

The assault, part of an operation dubbed Golden Victory, began with coalition air strikes and shelling by naval ships, according to Saudi-owned satellite news channels and state media.

The coalition's initial battle plan appears to involve a pincer movement. The port is some 150 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of Sanaa, Yemen's capital, which has been in Houthi hands since September 2014. The Saudi-led coalition has been criticized for its airstrikes killing civilians.

Some 2,000 troops who crossed the Red Sea from an Emirati naval base in the African nation of Eritrea were awaiting orders to move in from the west after Yemeni government forces seize Hodeida's port, Yemeni security officials said. They spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to brief journalists. He said the U.N. Security Council must act to secure a cease-fire before the people of Hodeida "suffer the same fate as those in Aleppo, Mosul or Raqqa". The Saudi-led coalition entered the war in March 2015.

The United Nations is calling for an end to the fighting.
