Ghana to dissolve football association over bribery allegations

Ghana has made a decision to dissolve its national football association a day after officials, including the body's president, were shown in a documentary taking kickbacks.

Many, after watching the premiere of the investigative piece, called on the football kinpin to resign but Mr. Mornah contends that the call for the resignation of Mr. Nyantakyi is misplaced. "The GFA dissolved", the Sports Ministed is quoted to have told Joy FM.

The head of Ghana's soccer federation, Kwesi Nyantakyi, said on Friday he had resigned after he was suspended by global soccer body FIFA for possible ethics violations having been accused of taking kickbacks.

The President of the Association was filmed collecting $65,000 from "investors" to influence the president and vice-president to get road contracts.

"Consequently, the police are to take all such relevant measures as are necessary to ensure that the contents of the documentary are rapidly and thoroughly investigated; having regard to the widespread nature of the apparent rot involving top GFA officials, top NSA officials, match commissioners, football administrators and referees, government has chose to take immediate steps to have the GFA dissolved".

"This is by no means an admission of wrongdoing for issues on the video", Mr. Nyantakyi said in a statement sent to the GFA General Secretary on Friday.

Ghana's U-20 team also won a historic World Cup under his reign.

According to Nyantakyi, he was deceived by the undercover journalists which he described as "scammers", he also apologised to President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Bawumia and the Ministers of state for associating them with the private conversations on the video. Nyantakyi also has a role within FIFA's council, who are believed to be monitoring the situation.

In the two-hour documentary - "When Greed and Corruption Become the Norm", released on Wednesday - several Ghanaian referees and appointing officials are shown allegedly accepting cash gifts in exchange for fixing games in the Ghana Premier League, including one between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko, and cup competitions at various levels of the game.
