Instagram has more than a billion users

SAN FRANCISCO: Instagram said Wednesday it now has more than one billion active users, as it unveiled a new long-form video feature in a bid to attract "creators" like those on YouTube. Commenting on this, CEO Kevin Systrom said that "Instagram is now a global community of one billion!" Well, we've got good news for you; Instagram has unveiled IGTV, a new video app with longer content exclusively in the beloved vertical format.

IGTV will let all users be a creator and let them upload vertical videos through Instagram's app or the web.

On IGTV, long-form vertical videos can go as long as ten minutes, when previously they were limited to one minute.

Instagram also shares how businesses, creators, and more can "leverage" the new platform, reiterating its massive user base.

From what Instagram has shown so far, the service looks like a fun addition to Instagram's existing video tools. The fact that it's available in two apps stems from the fact that many people like using the main Instagram app to flit between tiny pieces of content like photos, short videos, and Stories, and might be less inclined to pay attention to a half-hour video.

Although there is now no advertising in the app, that is coming based on Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom's comments during the event today. Last year, Facebook launched Watch, a section inside the social network for shows from professional media companies and individual creators. Instead, each video can be up to an hour long.

When users open the app, IGTV starts playing immediately.

The changes stopped videos "unsuitable for all advertisers" from earning ad revenue, and were dubbed the "adpocalypse" by video-makers who saw their income fall.

To start, there will be a cap on the videos: 10 minutes for most users, and an hour for certain accounts with more followers. And Instagram also plans to pull in celebrities to post their videos on the app, mainly to rapidly popularise the new platform. Channels have access to monetization; some creators can receive sponsorship of $7.99 a month; brands have tools to direct content, and the Content ID detects pirated content (even if it has its faults). Instagram has always been a place to connect with the people who inspire, educate and entertain you every day.

More importantly, 72 percent of US kids ranging from 13 to 17 years old use Instagram, second to YouTube at 85 percent, according to the Pew Research Center. We hope it brings you closer to the people and things you love.

"Younger audiences are spending more time with amateur content creators and less time with professionals", Instagram said in a blog post. Instagram's feed also has posts from advertisers.
