Kashmir under central rule as BJP breaks alliance

Mehbooba Mufti during a Budget session of the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly in Jammu in January 2017. Mehbooba resigned as the state’s chief minister on Tuesday after the BJP pulled out the alliance with her Peoples Democratic Party

Mumbai: There was a 64% rise in terror incidents in Jammu and Kashmir over three years to 2017, providing some perspective to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) decision to call off its three-year alliance with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The state will now be ruled by the governor until elections take place.

"Keeping in mind the fact that J-K is an integral part of India, integrity and sovereignty of the region, we want the governor to take charge of the state", said Ram Madhav.

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen president and MP Asaduddin Owaisi feared there would not be normality after governor's rule is imposed.

Madhav mentioned the Centre's announcement of a ceasefire during Ramzan and the appointment of an interlocutor for talks with stakeholders in the Valley as confidence-building measures. Meanwhile, chief minister Mehbooba Mufti and her ministers sent their resignations to the state's Governor, N N Vohra.

National Conference leader and former chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir Omar Abdullah tweeted after Tuesday's fallout.

The BJP also heads the central government, and officials say Prime Minister Narendra Modi was involved in the decision to withdraw from the coalition.

It cited the killing of influential Kashmiri journalist Shujaat Bukhari last week to make its point.

They spoke on condition of anonymity as they weren't authorized to brief journalists. The Saudi-led coalition has been criticized for its airstrikes killing civilians.

In the 2015 elections, the BJP won 25 seats and the PDP 28 in the 87-member assembly.

"Wish Mehbooba Mufti had gone with some dignity rather than having "rug pulled under her feet", he said. More than 130 people have been killed in the state this year and at least 120 men have joined extrremist groups.

The rift in the alliance was out in the open in February after BJP ministers publicly supported alleged rapists of an eight-year-old Muslim girl in Kathua district.

They said the party high command has convened the meeting tomorrow review the performance of the party ministers and other issues concerned to the party.

Although the BJP and the PDP had campaigned vigorously against each other, they came together with an Agenda of Alliance in the hope of pulling the state out of the cycle of violence.

"I have resigned from chief ministership, shook hands with BJP for the sake of serving the people", she said.

After holding a high-level security meet in Delhi on Tuesday, the Union Home minister hinted that a major military operation is in the offing in Jammu and Kashmir to check cross border terrorism and flush out terrorists who have already infiltrated in the Valley with the support of Pakistan and locals. Defending her rule, she also said a "muscular policy will not work in Jammu and Kashmir". "We have to take a decision and may be the meeting has been called for that objective", said a senior BJP leader, who wished not to be named.

"She wanted to continue with the ceasefire but the Centre was adamant because ceasefire results were not on expected lines", a senior BJP leader familiar with the developments said.
