Kudlow describes US trade dispute with Canada as 'family quarrel'

Justin Trudeau and Donald Trump

He said G7 countries shouldn't be talking about waging a trade war when there are real wars to fight, pointing to challenges in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq.

Trump also is set to hold a series of one-on-one meetings, including with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron.

Despite the G7's efforts to coax the Trump administration away from a go-it-alone approach, some analysts now question whether Washington remains committed to basic policies that have upheld the post-World War Two worldwide economic system.

"There is no reason to use this provision to consider imposing tariffs on the automobile industry, and this appears to be either an attempt to affect domestic politics ahead of the election or for some other transactional objective regarding ongoing trade discussions".

"The G7 is an opportunity to meet to have frank and open discussions between countries that are longtime allies and friends", Trudeau argued. Now the G7's future is in doubt, with Trump's imposition of steel and aluminum tariffs on his G7 partners, as well as broader disagreements on the trade and climate change.

Western media and senior USA and European officials had meant to hide "the hidden deals" over the JCPOA and its relation with the above conflict, until the White House officially announced the decision to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum. Mexico originally said it planned to levy duties on US grapes and blueberries as well, but did not include those products on its tariff list.

"I'm waiting to hear what their reaction is going to be frankly".

He added at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Thursday that Trump's economic move is putting American jobs "on the line" too. But "neither do we mind signing a 6 country agreement if need be". In reality, the measure will just make pork legs more expensive for the Mexican people while China and Southeast Asia pick up the slack. "I believe in cooperation and multilateralism because I will resist hegemony with all my strength".

Trade wars are scary. Why isn't Wall Street freaking out?
Canada had earlier announced retaliatory tariffs on a range of United States imports, including maple syrup and ballpoint pens. He said Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs against American-made steel and aluminum, as well as on other goods.

"As I highlighted to the president, Air Force One is going to be arriving at Bagotville, at an air base that was created to protect the aluminum industry that the North American and American war effort was so dependent on in the Second World War", Trudeau said.

Macron and Trudeau made the comments at a joint press conference after private talks to form a united front ahead of the Group of Seven summit that begins Friday.

"The trade gap will narrow if we are allowed to export more to all these countries", Kudlow said.

The statement, the official added, would accept no language about Iran not respecting the terms of the nuclear accord or any condemnation of the agreement.

"We are all engaged in conflicts in Syria, in Iraq, in the Sahel, in different places in the world". It says that 25% of U.S. pork exports past year went to Mexico. "For me it's a question of principle".

It has also been suggested that Mr Trump had not been keen to attend the summit at all, with expected criticism and his meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un looming.

The Trump administration has threatened to impose sanctions against European companies that continue to do business with Tehran, an effort the United States has said it will resist.

Trump fired back - and the White House quickly announced that he's leaving the summit early Saturday before sessions on climate change and the environment.
