Merkel May Get More Time To Reach Immigration Deal

Members said Mr Seehofer would defy Merkel on Monday if no compromise has been reached by then and go ahead with the plans alone

Merkel herself is facing a showdown with her own hardline interior minister after his call for turning back undocumented migrants at German borders and speeding up ejections of rejected asylum seekers.

European stocks, and particularly the German market, have been hit once again over recent days by the possibility of political turmoil in Germany caused by disagreements within the ruling coalition over the country's migrant policy.

After meeting at Chancellor Angela Merkel's Meseberg retreat outside Berlin, she and France's Emmanuel Macron presented the new budget as a means of boosting the bloc's economic competitiveness.

CSU expects that at the next European Union summit in June, Merkel will be able to reach a compromise with other countries on the issue of countering the influx of illegal immigrants. She said it will then have to consider what happens next.

Seehofer has been one of the fiercest critics of Merkel's liberal stance.

Going ahead with the move unilaterally and with Merkel's explicit opposition could lead to the collapse of the German government which was sworn in only three months ago.

Merkel and Seehofer are due to speak to the press at 2 p.m. local time. She has vehemently opposed his calls for Germany to unilaterally turn back people previously registered as asylum-seekers in other European Union countries.

There is even talk that the 70-year-old conservative alliance between the CSU and Merkel's Christian Democrats (CDU) could fall apart.

Meghan and Harry attend Royal Ascot with the Queen
It has now been reported that the Duchess of Sussex's dad was reportedly paid £7,500 for the tell-all interview . Markle made her debut appearance at the event in Ascot , Berkshire, UK, on Tuesday looking as glamorous as ever.

The CSU's top priority is a hard October state election in Bavaria in which it is trying to tamp down support for the anti-migration Alternative for Germany party.

Signalling that he is leaning towards the latter option, Seehofer wrote in a column in Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that "it is essential that the European Union summit takes a decision at the end of June".

Failure to reach a deal that can be presented as a breakthrough at the European level could precipitate a full-blown crisis in Germany that might topple Merkel after nearly 13 years as chancellor.

German news agency dpa is reporting that Interior Minister Horst Seehofer has made clear to his party that he wants to give Chancellor Angela Merkel until the end of June to find a European solution to migration issues.

On Sunday, June 17, the newspaper Bild, reports RIA Novosti.

Merkel's talks on Monday evening with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte could prove crucial if she is to have any chance of finding concordance in Brussels.

Merkel is adamant that a European solution is needed and is seeking bilateral deals with some partners, such as Italy and Greece, similar to one agreed between Turkey and the EU in 2016.

President Trump is digging in on a demonstrably false claim that the crime rate in Germany has risen as a result of refugees in that country, despite the fact that the government of Germany recently released data showing the exact opposite - that the crime rate has actually decreased in Germany to the lowest levels since 1992.
