Nominee for U.S. ambassador to South Korea backs ‘pause’ in military drills

U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un shake hands during the signing of a document after their summit at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore

North Korea's state-run Korean Central News Agency said the two leaders agreed to the principle of "step-by-step" process and Trump expressed his intention to lift sanctions "over a period of goodwill dialogue" between the two countries.

After a three-way meeting with Mr Pompeo and Japan's top diplomat, South Korean foreign minister Kang Kyung-wha suggested the USA still had some explaining to do, telling reporters that the issue of the drills "was not discussed in depth".

"We're going to get complete denuclearisation and only then are we going to lift sanctions", Mr Pompeo added.

Putin said the meeting could take place during the Eastern Economic Forum in the city of Vladivostok in September this year, or can be organized separately.

Trump and Kim held the unprecedented meeting in Singapore, after which they signed a joint document praised by both leaders.

Pompeo was briefing North Asian leaders on the summit, meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in before heading to Beijing to talk with Chinese President Xi Jinping (習近平).

Mr Pompeo has travelled to South Korea to brief the US's regional allies on the agreement, and on Mr Trump's surprise announcement that he was ending the routine US-South Korea military drills which have so angered North Korea.

North and South Korea agreed at high-level military talks Thursday to restore their military communication lines in the Sea of Japan and Yellow Sea areas, according to a joint statement.

Still, there were signs as Pompeo met later with the top Japanese and South Korean diplomats that concerns about the freeze had not been fully resolved.

Putin added that Russian Federation is ready to "make all necessary efforts to establish ties, including in economic cooperation" with North Korea.

Democratic lawmakers pointed out that North Korea had often made similar statements in the past about "denuclearization", all the while developing nuclear weapons and ballistic missiles that could be capable of striking the US, Reuters reported. "And they'll come off when we know we're down the road".

He declared there was "no longer a Nuclear Threat from North Korea" and that he could see "great potential" in the country.

Wang said China had consistently supported the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula but that it was impossible to solve the issue overnight. A professor at the University of Notre Dame, Michael Desch, who has written about the civilian leadership of the US military, wasn't too concerned about the salute, although it seemed unusual to him. When pressed on how the US would verify the North's denuclearization, though, Pompeo became irritated and berated a reporter by calling the question insulting and ludicrous.

He said President Donald Trump is "in the lead" but that "I will be the person who takes the role of driving this process forward".

At the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing, US senators questioned Harris about his position on the president's unilateral concession that could weaken the US-South Korea alliance.

The key phrase in the agreement is that in exchange for security guarantees, Kim reaffirms his commitment to the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Mr Trump's surprise promise to call off military exercises, describing them as expensive and "provocative", delighted North Korea and China but caught key USA allies off-guard.
