North Korea summit to go ahead June 12 as planned

Vladimir Putin

The US-North Korea summit is back on, President Donald Trump announced today, ending weeks of uncertainty about a historic meeting with Kim Jong Un to discuss ending the North Korean leader's nuclear program.

After the 80-minute meeting, Trump told reporters that the summit he canceled a week ago would be happening June 12 in Singapore as originally scheduled. "I think it will be a process".

"I never said it goes in one meeting", he added.

Trump's announcement comes after he met in the Oval Office with Kim Yong Chol, a high-ranking North Korean official who is close with the country's leader.

A former intelligence chief, Kim is his country's top nuclear weapons negotiator and the highest-ranking North Korean official to meet with a US president in 18 years.

White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said late on Thursday that the details of Friday's meeting between Kim Yong-chol and Trump in Washington were still being worked out. They also met during the American diplomat's two trips to Pyongyang in April and May. "We've gotten to know their people very well. Oh, would you like to see what was in that letter", Trump initially said. I haven't opened it, I didn't open it in front of the director.

Though the U.S. is engaged in three separate sets of talks with North Koreans around the globe, it's still unclear whether Trump will actually meet with Kim.

"We're not going to go in and sign something on June 12". We can go fast, we can go slowly'. "We talked about ending the war", Trump said. Moon later told reporters that the two leaders agreed the summit "must be successfully held". "He's going to be careful. And we talked about sanctions". By the next day, he was signalling the event could be back on after a conciliatory response from North Korea.

The end of the biggest Scripps National Spelling Bee in history came abruptly, and it wasn't the conclusion that many expected. Kaplan is one of 16 students who have made the finals after at least 500 others were eliminated during the preliminaries.

North Korea's flurry of diplomatic activity following an increase in nuclear weapons and missile tests in 2017 suggests that Kim is eager for sanctions relief to build his economy and for the global legitimacy a summit with Trump would provide.

Even as he pulled out, though, Trump urged Kim to "call me or write" if he wanted to revive the meeting.

Trump said they had discussed formally ending the Korean War, which has been largely frozen since an armistice ended hostilities, but not the underlying conflict, in 1953. Jo presented Clinton with a letter from the North Korean leader inviting him for a meeting in Pyongyang, an invitation Clinton ultimately turned down.

US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un will try to salvage prospects for a high-stakes nuclear summit. He said it was likely that more than one meeting would be necessary. "You're talking about years of hostility, years of problems".

This Reuters photo shows Kim Yong-chol, a vice chairman of North Korea's ruling Workers' Party's Central Committee, arriving at his hotel in NY on May 30, 2018. "The media forgot that". And if the U.S. grants this wish without getting a good deal in return, it could send both parties back to the brink of nuclear war.

Mr. Trump said he was hopeful that his meeting with Mr. Kim could still take place on June 12 in Singapore, adding that resumed talks have gone very well and that the negotiations "are in good hands".

"They want it. We think it's important-and I think we would be making a big mistake if we didn't have it".
