North Korea's Kim lands in Singapore ahead of summit with Trump

Trump and Kim make history with a handshake

US President Donald Trump (R) gestures as he meets with North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un (L) at the start of their historic US-North Korea summit, at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore on June 12, 2018.

The historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un continued midday Tuesday, as the leaders satisfied their appetites while holding negotiations with a contingent of advisers over a working lunch.

"The ultimate objective we seek from diplomacy with North Korea has not changed - the complete, verifiable and irreversible de-nuclearization of the Korea peninsula is only outcome that the United States will accept", declared Pompeo.

Shortly after arriving in Singapore in the afternoon, Mr Kim, who is Chairman of the State Affairs Commission in North Korea, the nation's highest decision-making body, met Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong for the first time. -North Korea meetings, including translators, photographers and logistical staff, asking how they can be sure they are not actually spies.

"We appreciate your hospitality and professionalism and friendship", Trump said, seated at a long banquet table ahead of a working lunch with delegations from the USA and Singapore.

Trump said Thursday that he has stopped using the "maximum pressure" phrase because "we are going into a friendly negotiation". When asked if Kim could be invited to the US, Trump said "certainly". "I am totally prepared to walk away", he said.

The AP reported that the White House kept text reporters for the outlet and other newswires Reuters and Bloomberg, in addition to representatives for radio and foreign press corps, from witnessing the photo-op between Trump and Kim ahead of their meeting.

Accompanied by senior officials, the leaders of both countries had just dined on avocado salad, fresh octopus, short rib and braised cod and, Mr. Trump said, "we're going right now for a signing". "And it's my honour and we will have a terrific relationship I have no doubt". Libya's Moammar Gadhafi gave up his nuclear weapons program, only to fall from power.

Mr Lee also wished Mr Kim success for the summit, and expresssd the hope that it would help along prospects for peace and stability on the Korean peninsula and the wider region.

The summit will be the first between a North Korean leader and a sitting American president, and could define the fate of millions, along with the leaders' own political futures. Mr. Trump "gets along so well with ruthless, brutal dictators, but you have this acrimonious, hostile relationship with the Canadian Prime Minister?"

Still, he said, Mr. Trump's aim with Mr. Kim was clear: to build trust by creating a personal bond.

Mr Lee is slated to meet separately with each leader at the Istana in the run-up to the summit.
