Salmonella outbreak afflicts 60 people

Massive salmonella outbreak linked to backyard chicken flocks

A warning about a salmonella outbreak that's apparently linked to pre-cut melons that were sold at Walmart and other stores in the Midwest.

Other states that have reported illnesses as part of this outbreak include IL (6 cases), IN (11 cases), Missouri (10 cases) and OH (1 case).

WAVE3 reports here that the ISDH say 60 people in five states have been sickened as of June 7.

Caito Foods has ceased producing and distributing these products as the company and FDA continue their investigation. It recalled fresh cut watermelon, honeydew melon, cantaloupe, and fresh-cut fruit medley products at its facility. They were distributed to Costco, Jay C, Kroger, Payless, Owen's, Sprouts, Trader Joe's, Walgreens, Walmart, and Whole Foods/Amazon.

Most of those affected said they bought the fruit at Kroger or Walmart stores. Kroger Co. said customers who purchased the melon from the company's IN and MI store locations should not consume them and return them to a store for a full refund or replacement.

The departments are urging anyone who purchased pre-cut melon at either Walmart or Kroger to throw it away.

'Nobody is left' - Guatemala volcano ravaged entire families
Just days after the eruption the volcano started to smoke again and the emergency services quickly moved everyone to safety. Rescuers, police and journalists hurried to leave the area as a siren wailed and loudspeakers blared, "Evacuate".

Consumers who do not remember where their pre-cut melon came from should also discard it. It said there are 60 cases between Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio.

It's likely more cases will turn up, the CDC said.

The CDC said the pre-cut melon was supplied by Caito Foods in Indianapolis.

According to the CDC, Salmonella infections most often cause mild to severe gastroenteritis and severe invasive infections, both which are potentially life-threatening. For some people, though, the diarrhea that accompanies the illness may be severe and require hospitalization.

Among those who fell ill from the deadly bacteria, 31 sought treatment at a hospital complaining of symptoms such as vomiting, fever and diarrhea, aol.com reported.
