Sri Lanka defends cricket team over ball tampering allegation

Devon Smith is unbeaten on 45

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has pleaded not guilty to breaching Article 2.2.9 of the ICC Code of Conduct and, as such, Javagal Srinath of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees will hold a hearing following the conclusion of the St Lucia Test against the Windies.

Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal has been charged with ball-tampering by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

A day after holding up play for two hours having been penalised five runs for allegedly altering the condition of the ball, Sri Lanka slipped from 32 without loss to 48 for four in their second innings.

The umpires had also levelled a penalty of five runs against Sri Lanka 10 minutes before the start of the play on Day 3, and chose to change the ball.

SLC confirmed support of their players in a subsequent release - saying their team was continuing the Test "under protest" - while Chandimal has formally denied the charge as laid by the umpires.

"The team management has informed us that Sri Lankan players have not engaged in any wrongdoing", the statement read.

"The ICC can confirm the match officials in the second Test between West Indies and Sri Lanka changed the ball and awarded 5 penalty runs to West Indies", the ICC tweeted.

"SLC advised the team to take the field to ensure the continuity of the match and wish to commend the decision taken by the team "under protest" to ensure the upholding of the spirit of the game", added the statement.

In March this year, Australia were caught tampering with the ball in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

Following the Bancroft incident, which resulted in three Australian players being handed lengthy bans by their own board, the ICC made a decision to consider severe sanctions against ball tampering.

On the field, Sri Lanka clawed their way back into the match to restrict West Indies' lead to 47 after the hosts resumed on 123 for two replying to 253.

They penalized the team before play on Saturday with a change of ball and awarded five runs to the West Indies.

Sri Lanka was 34/1 at stumps in their second innings, trailing by 13.

The Pakistanis did not return to the field after tea on the fourth day and the umpires deemed this to mean they had forfeited the match, even though Pakistan later said they were willing to play.

For West Indies, only opener Devon Smith and wicketkeeper Shane Dowrich posted scores of substance, 61 and 55 respectively.
