Star Wars Spin-Off Films Reportedly On Hold

Not even Darth Maul could prevent the Star Wars Solo flop

Earlier this afternoon, Collider reported that a Lucasfilm insider claimed the standalone Star Wars Story films had all been put on hold for the foreseeable future, likely the result of Solo's disappointing reception. The first entry, "Rogue One", was a critical and financial success, earning $532 million domestically en route to becoming the highest grossing movie of 2016.

Regardless, this is having an impact on Disney's plans to expand the Star Wars mythology with more Star Wars Story spinoffs. Indeed, while the film was fun, it spent way too much time answering questions no one was really asking, and in doing so, failed in that stated mission of relevance. This includes the Obi-Wan Kenobi and Boba Fett spinoffs that were in development.

Lucasfilm is now devoting nearly all its energy and focus to the main franchise, specifically Star Wars: Episode IX which will release on December 20th, 2019. Although Qi'Ra (Emilia Clarke) is not referenced or mentioned at all in the movies set after Solo, she ended that movie on a very ambiguous note, with more stories clearly to tell.

Tax-Free Internet Sales Are Now Dead
Before this ruling, online retailers had to have a physical presence in a state to be subjected to that state's sales tax. Trump's own online store,, only collects sales tax in two states, according to The Wall Street Journal .

With Episode IX still over 500 days away and the next film at least 365 beyond that, it's easy to assume that whatever Star Wars film that premieres in 2021 might still be up in the air.

That's probably why reports are now circulating that Lucasfilm is rethinking what they're betting on going forward, with "Star Wars Story" spinoff films taking a backseat to main installments in the franchise.

More as we hear it. By planning for the new Johnson trilogy, and Benioff and Weiss series of films, we can look forward to something new and fresh. In its own fascination with Star Wars in your eyes until you can't see, Lucasfilm seemed convinced it could pull an MCU, forgetting the MCU has a cohesive, forward-moving story. Then there was Josh Trank's firing from the Boba Fett film. Just this week, a group of fans announced in earnest that they are trying to raise money to remake The Last Jedi, which they felt was unbecoming of a "true" Star Wars film.
