The Doctor Can Block

Chiefs offensive lineman Laurent Duvernay Tardif can finally put away the medical books for a while and spend all his free time studying up his playbook

But instead of dropping out of medical school, Mr Duvernay-Tardif decided he would balance both passions by studying in the off-season, which resulted in extending his four-year medical degree to seven.

Duvernay-Tardif graduated Tuesday morning from McGill University in Montreal, where he earned his medical doctorate. McGill University allowed him to continue his medical studies during the Chiefs' offseason, and now he's completed them. "Today I become a doctor!".

"I think it's important to build a career that you're going to be able to do a long time", Duvernay-Tardif told reporters after his graduation ceremony.

While some of his teammates initially questioned his commitment to the team and the sport, Duvernay-Tardif said that some of them now come to him for advice about their sprains and strains.

He made the quick trip to graduation in Canada but will turn around nearly immediately and head back to Kansas City to rejoin his team-mates for voluntary organised team activities, ESPN reported.

"Football is an awesome opportunity in the sense that not everyone can play football and live off of that, but being a doctor is more than that". "When you get drafted, it nearly feels like a surprise".

Before that, the six-foot-five, 321-pound Duvernay-Tardif was essentially a student-athlete, first with the Redmen and then the Chiefs, who selected him in the sixth round of the '14 National Football League draft. He was selected by the Chiefs in the sixth round of the 2014 NFL Draft, while he was in his third year of medical school. "I think it just shows a coach who thinks outside just the scope of football and wants you to grow as a person as well as a player".

"I need to make sure I pass it because it's the past year I'm allowed to pass that exam", he said. I'm proud to be in the National Football League, and it's been an incredible journey to get here, but being able to combine medical school at the same time, this is the accomplishment I'm proudest about, to be able to combine both.

But Duvernay-Tardif said residency will have to wait, at least for now.

"I can start looking at my different options now that this is done".
