Trump considers pardon for Blagojevich

Trump to pardon Dinesh D’Souza

Trump announced on Twitter his decision to pardon pundit and filmmaker Dinesh D'Souza, who pleaded guilty in 2014 to US campaign finance law violations and was an outspoken critic of Democratic former President Barack Obama, saying he had been "treated very unfairly by our government!" He was thereafter sentenced to eight months in a halfway house near his home in San Diego and five years of probation.

Preet Bharara, the Indian American US attorney for the Southern District of NY was one of the led prosecutors in that case.

D'Souza said the pardon was not something he expected, and he also reiterated what Trump said yesterday about how the case against him was unfair and he wanted D'Souza to be a bigger voice.

Prosecutors said D'Souza had other individuals donate money to Republican Wendy Long, a Republican challenging Sen.

Now President Donald Trump may pardon her forthose crimes. He told reporters on Thursday that he is considering pardoning both Stewart and former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

New York Attorney General Barbara Underwood on Thursday criticized Trump's pardons of his supporters and called on the state Legislature to change the state's double-jeopardy law so that those who break its laws can not evade justice with a presidential pardon. Also, then-U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald, a longtime friend of Comey, prosecuted the case.

India says it has contained Nipah virus
Two other confirmed cases of Nipah virus have been detected and the patients are being treated in a hospital. Precautions: Avoid contact with bats or its faecal droppings and pigs.

It wasn't the first time Mr. Trump expressed sympathies for Blagojevich, although it was the first time while president. "However, I believe this is opening a door, and if he doesn't follow through with [more] people who are not well-known, I think that will be extremely disappointing".

"Lawmakers must act now to close New York's double jeopardy loophole and ensure that anyone who evades federal justice by virtue of a politically expedient pardon can be held accountable if they violate NY law".

But prosecutors said the charges were nonpolitical and arose out of the FBI's "routine review" of campaign filings. D'Souza retweeted Trump's tweet but did not comment otherwise. Critics were quick to note Trump was subverting prosecutions involving his nemesis, former Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey; Comey's lawyer, Patrick Fitzgerald, the former U.S. attorney in Chicago; and Preet Bharara, whom Trump fired previous year as U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY. He said he telephoned D'Souza on Wednesday night. "Worst news since their parents told them to get summer jobs", D'Souza wrote at the time.

During his plea hearing, D'Souza admitted how he "knew that causing a campaign contribution to be made in the name of another was wrong and something the law forbids". Though he claims that decision was not because of Comey's investigation into collusion between Russian Federation officials and Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, the commander-in-chief told NBC News in May that he considered "this Russian Federation thing" before firing. The origin of the pardon dates back hundreds of years to English monarchy, said Steven Schwinn, an expert in constitutional law and a professor at the John Marshall Law School. He also noted that Blagojevich is a Democrat.

The US leader later said he was also considering commuting the sentence of Rod Blagojevich, a former IL governor jailed for corruption, and Stewart, the celebrity chef jailed for five months in 2004-05 for making false statements in an insider trading case.

D'Souza in 2012 released an anti-Obama film, "2016: Obama's America", based on his 2010 book, "The Roots of Obama's Rage". Hundreds of people apply for pardon or commutation every year with the Office of the Pardon Attorney under the Department of Justice, according to Samuel Morison, an attorney who specializes in federal clemency.
