US, North Korean Representatives to Meet in Singapore on Monday - White House

ICAN chief to visit Singapore

Trump is expected to arrive sometime around 8 p.m. local time.

It's unclear when it will wrap up and when we'll learn what the two sides agreed to, if anything. A USA official cited by Bloomberg predicted the meeting will go into the evening and potentially end with a joint resolution. -North Korea summit will take place on June 12. The White House would likely want a faster timeline.

Previous year the North carried out what was by far its most powerful nuclear test to date and launched a flurry of missiles - including two over Japan - while Trump threatened Pyongyang with "fire and fury" and Kim dubbed him a "mentally deranged USA dotard".

Mr Kim is seeking security guarantees and relief from economic sanctions.

Security - meaning he gets to stay in power.

Pope Francis has prayed that the summit this week between the USA and North Korean leaders succeeds in laying the groundwork for peace.

Such a meeting was unthinkable just months ago when Trump and Kim were exchanging insults and threats that raised fears of war in the region.

When Trump and Kim meet on the resort island of Sentosa on Tuesday they will be making history even before they start.

A US official says Monday that the leaders will meet for up to two hours before an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective advisers.

But, prior to leaving Canada, the mercurial president again changed his tune, calling it a "one-time shot" and adding that he would know "within the first minute" of meeting Kim whether an agreement will be possible.

"I feel that Kim Jong-Un wants to do something great for his people".

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is leading the US negotiating team. National security adviser John Bolton will be there too, but he caused a dust-up when he referenced the "Libya Model" on "Face the Nation" in April.

"I am on my way to Singapore where we have a chance to achieve a truly wonderful result for North Korea and the World", Trump wrote in a pair of tweets.

The White House has been careful to keep expectations in check.

.

Earlier in the week, Trump also said he has done little preparation for the meeting, noting that the meeting would be all about "attitude".

"I'm glad to say that as of now, it's all systems go", he said. "We look forward to seeing you, and we look forward to the summit, and hopefully, some wonderful things will work out" So it was really very warm, very nice.

Mr Howard, who is in his late 30s, sported a slick combed-back hairstyle and cracked jokes about the American president. "But he's also going into the summit with his eyes wide open".

Non-proliferation expert Daryl Kimball, director of the Arms Control Association, said that to make the summit a success, Trump and Kim would need to agree on a framework for expert-level negotiations "to hammer out the details and time frame for specific action-for-action steps". We are where we are because Mr Trump has taken a sword and sliced his way through conventional diplomatic behaviour.

The news covered the front page of the ruling party's newspaper and was the top - and only - item on the first news broadcast of the day on Korean Central Television, which for many North Koreans is the only channel available. The government controls all aspects of the economy, the media and the political process.

State media in North Korea on Monday (Jun 11) covered Kim Jong Un's arrival in Singapore in a news bulletin.

Trump and other top USA officials have promised a "bright future" for the North if it quickly relinquishes its nuclear weapons - including economic inducements and a security agreement.
