Here's What Serena Williams Said Post Wimbledon Defeat

Serena Williams Upset in Wimbledon Final

Wimbledon runner-up Serena Williams has responded to claims of sexism over scheduling of the women's final at Wimbledon. Kerber made Serena look sluggish winning more than 2/3rds of her service points, particularly doing well on the second serve, and also breaking Serena 4 times in the match, compared to just a lone break for Williams.

"To all the moms out there, I was playing for you today and I tried", she added, as the crowd cheered.

And when she swung her racket, the measure was nearly always true. She beat Williams in the Australian Open final that year, then won that year's U.S. Open to briefly replace her at No. 1 in the rankings.

Angelique Kerber sealed her third grand slam in just over an hour. "I was really hoping to get this far", Williams said as she appeared to fight back tears.

"I'd just like to tell all the mums, like, I had such a long struggle to come back, and it was really hard".

After giving birth to their baby girl, Williams had several complications which required immediate and multiple surgeries.

Attacking right-hander Graf relied on her big forehand and serve while left-hander Kerber is more of a counter-puncher, as she displayed to great effect on Saturday when dealing with the inevitable Williams barrage. But her journey to make the final of the tournament that she first won as a 21-year-old testifies her status as perhaps the sport's greatest champion. Her ability to retrieve a huge number of balls would put the focus on her opponent's footwork and physical resilience.

Red Sox Are Apparently Still Checking On Manny Machado
And with an already depleted farm system, it's better off that they have kept themselves out of the running. Machado came into Saturday hitting.313/.383/.568 (161 OPS+) with 23 home runs on the season.

Williams was competing in her first grand slam final since she took maternity leave to give birth to her daughter after winning her last honour in Melbourne at the 2017 Australian Open.

Nadal was defeated 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (11/9), 3-6, 10-8 in the second-longest semi-final ever played at the tournament, at 5 hours, 15 minutes. But, rather than pull away, she became tentative again, dumping volleys in the net and unable to match the consistency of Kerber.

Alexis Ohanian took to Instagram with a touching message for Williams.

Kerber displayed an uncanny ability to absorb this power by retrieving well on both flanks and whenever the opportunity presented itself, turn the heat back on Williams. All she could do was smile.

Serena, who had played well up until this point, did not play a clean and effective match in the final.

But it was all about Kerber as she absorbed everything Williams threw at her and counter-punched in very effective fashion.

"It's obviously disappointing but I can't be disappointed", Williams said. I was trying to not thinking too much that I was playing against Serena. I have so much to look forward to.
