Neymar leads Brazil into quarter-finals

Giant killers with an expiry date Can Mexico break their quarter-final duck against Brazil

Brazil will face the victor of Belgium-Japan on Friday in the quarterfinals.

Brazil got second-half goals from Neymar and Roberto Firmino to hand Mexico a loss in the first game of the knockout round for a seventh consecutive World Cup.

For Mexico, the defeat is no doubt a big disappointment for a talented group of players and millions of fans around the country who, after a promising start to the tournament, had dared to dream that El Tri could go farther in Russian Federation 2018 than the team had ever gone before.

Outside Brazil, fans and former players condemned the Paris St Germain player, with Denmark's Peter Schmeichel calling his antics "disgraceful", former England player Alan Shearer tweeting "STOP IT".

Mexico has now lost in the round of 16 at every tournament over the same period of time, extending its wait for the "quinto partido" - or fifth game - for at least another four years.

Just like they did with their superbly-worked opening goal.

With Messi and Ronaldo having packed their bags, Neymar is the final superstar remaining the World Cup. Neymar got behind the Mexican defence and tried to find the far corner, only for Ochoa's fingertips to put the ball into the path of an onrushing Firmino to tap it in.

Since the brilliance of Neymar came up, let's also discuss another feature of his game; his ability to make a fool of himself while trying to be smart.

Heat advisory issued for today
Temperatures will be a touch cooler in the Midwest, but heat index levels will still hover around 100 degrees from Texas to MI . The heat will expand toward the Northeast on Saturday with temperatures in the 90s and heat index values into the upper 90s.

The five-time World Cup winners went up a gear and dominated the rest of the game as the Mexicans ran out of steam with Willian and Neymar going close.

Neymar scored a 51st minute goal to put Brazil up 1-0 against Mexico.

Replays appeared to show Layun caught Neymar on his ankle but he escaped sanction. They caused problems for Brazil, too, initially.

"This is a game of men that is played with intensity and not with so much clowning". This was similar to the performances against Costa Rica and Serbia last week when they did just about enough to win.

Brazil coach Tite also played a big role in the victory over Mexico, deciding to replace Philippe Coutinho with Firmino. My players got more and more exhausted because of that situation.

Neymar was asked about Osorio's comments but it was the moment Tite took charge.

Bidding for a record-extending sixth title in Russia, Brazil weathered an early storm at Samara Arena before Neymar turned on the style to underline their status as favourites.

"Us attackers have to score the goals because we know that we are very strong at the back".
