Russia's Putin meets Iran Supreme Leader's aide in Moscow

Russian forces guarded checkpoints as some of those displaced by the war returned to their hometown of Bosra

The Kremlin said Putin and Velayati discussed the situation in Syria and bilateral relations and Velayati had given Putin messages from Khamenei and from Iran's president Hassan Rouhani.

Mr Velayati argued that Iran along with Russian Federation helped stem fighting in Syria and prevented the country from falling to ISIS and other militants.

Speaking at a press conference in Moscow, Velayati revealed that the Iranians and Russians are going to remain in Syria and Iraq to protect both countries from terrorist groups, as well as from USA aggression.

He further referred to demands by U.S. officials that Iranians should exit from Syria and Iraq, saying that the Islamic Republic is not present in the Arab countries upon the US's request so as to leave at Washington's demand. "This coordination does not have to correspond to Israel's demands".

Under the 2015 agreement, Iran strictly limited uranium enrichment capacity to satisfy the powers that it could not be used to develop atomic bombs. It is not clear what specific actions Putin wants Israel to refrain from taking. Russian Federation has stationed troops in Syria, a key regional ally, for decades.

It is worth noting that the focus was mainly on Iranian oil exports in light of the increasing pressure from Washington. "Why would we trust them and hold negotiations with them?"

Velayati said a major Russian company has signed a $4 billion oil deal with Iran, which will become operational "in the near future".

"Trading Ukraine for Syria" was first brought up by an Israeli cabinet member shortly after Trump's entering office, the New Yorker magazine reported.

The pressure on Iran is mounting as US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw from a 2015 deal that lifted most sanctions on Iran is forcing a number of global companies to reconsider ties with the Islamic republic, putting in jeopardy its giant oil and natural gas projects.

This was in response to a question about Israel demanding a pullout of all Iranians from Syria.

He also emphasized the need for USA forces to remain in Syria in order to safeguard American interests in the region, despite Trump's statements in the past of his intention to bring home the troops from Syria.

In June 24, the Israeli army said its air forces launched a missile towards a drone which was near its northern border coming from Syria and forced it to retreat back.

Velayati also said that US sanctions against Iran could raise oil prices and harm oil consumers. After years of ruinous civil war, Iran and its proxy militias, including the Lebanese Hezbollah, have built up a formidable presence stretching from the Iraqi border through central Syria to Lebanon. "We will help Syria counter the United States aggression".

Syrian state media said Israeli jets fired on military positions in the southwestern Quneitra province, inflicting material damage.

Tel Aviv has warned Damascus of any kind of approaches towards the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel in 1967.
