South Korea coach 'empty' despite beating Germany

South Korea vs. Germany: World Cup highlights and recap

Sweden's 3-0 victory over Mexico ensured Germany finished bottom of Group F and were eliminated in the opening round of a World Cup for the first time since 1938. We just did not deserve it.

Even in their second game, a 2-1 win over Sweden, Die Mannschaft looked weak and had to rely on a late goal from Toni Kroos to keep their World Cup hopes alive into their final game having done down to 10 men. They were still in position to advance despite trailing Sweden, but they were waiting some with tears in their eyes for Germany to do the inevitable and ruin their chances of moving on.

In fact, only Brazil of the past five winners have managed to extend their defence of the title past the group stage with 1998 winners France falling at the first hurdle in 2002.

While the Germans were clumsy in front of goal, Kim Young-gwon and Son Heung-min scored late while their teammates defended superbly with last-minute tackles and hard collective work.

Despite being flagged offside initially, the goal was eventually given after VAR got involved, with the final touch before the goal actually coming off a German player.

South Korea also avoided another shameful record in their history book as the latest result didn't lead up to four consecutive defeats in worldwide matches, which would have been the first time for the senior national football team. With a loss to the Swedes, Mexico's fate would come down to the outcome of the Germany-South Korea match that was being played simultaneously.

South Korea sit in last place in Group F with two losses, but they're still in contention for the round of 16.

France Star Feels Sorry For Lionel Messi
France enters this marquee matchup at +135 on the money line, meaning you'd need to bet $100 on a French victory to win $135. Lloris refused to be drawn on comparisons between the talismanic Messi and France's prodigious winger Kylian Mbappe.

Nervous Germany increased the pressure after the break and poured forward but despite a one-sided second half it could not find the back of the net before South Korea's last-gasp double.

Germany are the first of the favourites to be knocked out, after Spain, Portugal and Argentina all scraped through the group stage.

"From the 65th minute we became incredibly hectic, played bad passes and were hit by many counter-attacks".

Germany head coach Joachim Loew was left shell-shocked.

"We need a couple of hours to see things clearly", Loew said. Suele made his first World Cup appearance as a replacement for Jerome Boateng.

"We didn't make it to the round of 16. but we sent the world number one packing", said a headline in Seoul's major Dong-A daily.
