Anxious Zimbabwe awaits presidential results as European Union mission notes election flaws

Violence breaks out in Zimbabwe as Mugabe’s choice for president cries foul

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission is by law given up to five days to release the results.

The security forces opened fire with guns, water cannons and tear gas, and protesters burned cars and threw rocks as helicopters hovered above Harare.

"I am not happy because at the polling station where I voted most of the people were voting for MDC alliance but if you see the results of the constituency it does not reflect the will of the people".

Police vehicles stand by as a man sweeps the street outside the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) headquarters in Harare, Zimbabwe, August 2, 2018. At one point, the relatives blocked hospital staff from wheeling the body to the mortuary and demanded a police explanation; a plainclothes officer said they could return Thursday to pick up the body after a police investigation. "We are not going to accept defeat", he added.

The ZANU-PF party of Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has claimed a majority of seats in parliament, according to official results announced Wednesday.

As he read out a statement on behalf of the opposition leader Nelson Chamisa, he said: "President Nelson Chamisa is shocked and saddened by the events in the capital today".

It also expressed "serious concerns" as representatives of Western and other groups gave their first assessments of whether the vote was free and fair - crucial for lifting global sanctions on the once-prosperous country.

A credible and peaceful vote was meant to end Zimbabwe's worldwide isolation and draw in foreign investment to revive the shattered economy.

"ZEC seeks to... reverse the people's presidential election victory".

"On many occasions, preparation, financing, media and hopefully not in the counting - it was advantageous for the ruling party", he told AFP as the mission called for transparency in the release of results. She urged members of the public to remain calm, shun violence and respect the laws of the country, while the media should report responsibly and objectively.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said Wednesday that of 210 parliamentary seats, 205 had been counted with ZANU-PF winning 144 and the MDC Alliance 61.

European Union observers voiced concern about delays in releasing the results of the presidential contest, a two-horse race between Chamisa and Mnangagwa, head of the ruling ZANU-PF party.

I'm humbled by the support you have given to me as a Presidential Candidate.

"We however encourage al students and youth to go and vote, but when the clarion call of defense has been raised, lets all do so in the interests of nation building and self cleansing from despotism", said Bassopo. "No amount of results manipulation will alter your will", he tweeted before the army was deployed.

Chamisa, 40, said. He also accused the commission of announcing the parliamentary results first to "reverse the people's presidential election victory", and "prepare Zim [Zimbabwe] mentally to accept fake presidential results".

Their allegation: The commission has delayed its full official announcement in order to rig the vote for incumbent President Emmerson Mnangagwa and his party, the Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front.

It alleges that the governing Zanu-PF party has rigged Monday's elections.
