Chicago weekend gun violence kills 9, injures more than 50

31 shot, two killed in Sunday morning Chicago shootings

"We just have to do what we have to do in those challenged areas to make it better".

"We continue to send a message that it's okay to commit these crimes by not doing anything as a community". Johnson react to weekend violenceMayor Rahm Emanuel said Monday morning he visited Stroger and Mt. Sinai hospitals to thank those that treated the victims of the violence.

CHICAGO: A burst of shootings over the weekend left 12 people dead and dozens more wounded in Chicago, the latest evidence of runaway gun violence in the third largest United States city. Between midnight and 7 a.m. Sunday, 40 people were shot and four were killed.

Gun violence has surged in Chicago in the last few years: 2016 was the deadliest in the city in 20 years, with 762 people killed.

"The police department isn't here to raise children, we're not".

"It's very rare we actually witness this stuff, ". Somebody knows who did it. Johnson echoed that, saying there are often people who know who pulled the trigger but don't go to police.

The shooting with the most victims left eight people wounded in a South Side neighborhood after a group of men walked up to the eight people standing in a courtyard and opened fire, the Sun-Times reported.

Authorities say at least 71 people were shot in Chicago over the weekend.

"The city of Chicago experienced a violent night", Bureau of Patrol Chief Fred Waller said Sunday afternoon.

The US banned 3D printed guns just in the nick of time
Cody Wilson , the founder of Defense Distributed , first published downloadable designs for a 3D-printed firearm in 2013. Senators added their voices later in the day, urging the president to reverse the settlement decision.

Waller said the summer heat brings crowds out to the streets, particularly when violence has taken place. "They take advantage of that opportunity, and they shoot into a crowd, no matter who they hit".

Even a block party was not safe from the violence.

The terse police log entries, summarized below, reflect some stark realities about Chicago's crime plague.

"You have young kids crying, older people crying, it's just so heartbreaking", said Ald. The suspects ran away on foot. At least 74 people were shot, and 11 killed, between 3 p.m. on Friday and 6 a.m. on Monday.

Waller said police were sticking with their strategy targeting illegal guns.

Johnson said that both murders and shootings are down on the year, but said this weekend showed there was still a lot to do.

Police seized 60 guns, adding to a total of 5,600 already confiscated in Chicago so far this year.

Police believe some of the multiple-victim attacks were random although most appear connected to gang-related violence.

A police spokesman says the extra police presence at the music festival did not play a role in the violence because officers working it were generally on their regular days off and on OT.
