Dozens of Manafort’s Seized Records Introduced at Trial

It's a day that featured testimony from five witnesses - including Sen.

When questioning witnesses who provided services to Manafort, prosecutors showed invoices that appeared to have been falsified as they sought to document the fraud charges.

US citizens are typically required to submit a Foreign Bank Account Report if the accumulated value of their foreign accounts exceeds $10,000 during a 12-month period.

The trial, however, is not about Russian Federation, or any such conspiracy, focused instead on the personal and business finances of Manafort, Trump's onetime campaign chairman.

Manafort, the lone American charged by Mueller who has opted to stand trial instead of cooperate with prosecutors, was described by his defense lawyer as a hugely successful worldwide political consultant who left the details of his finances to others. Devine testified that Manafort ran a tightly disciplined, professional campaign that contributed to his candidate's victory.

One of those on-lookers keeping a close eye on the Manafort trial: the president. Despite that, Manafort's case is widely viewed as a test to the legitimacy of Mueller's ongoing probe, which Trump has dismissed as a "witch hunt".

"Looking back on history, who was treated worse, Alfonse Capone, legendary mob boss, killer and Public Enemy Number One' or Paul Manafort, political operative & Reagan/Dole darling, now serving solitary confinement - although convicted of nothing?"

Manafort's defense team has largely based their defense on Manafort's former associate Rick Gates, who was indicted of bank and tax fraud alongside Manafort but pled guilty to his charges.

"He may testify in this case, he may not", Asonye said.

This courtroom sketch depicts Paul Manafort, fourth from right, standing with his lawyers in front of USA district Judge T.S Ellis III, center rear, and the selected jury, seated left, during the jury selection of his trial at the Alexandria Federal Courthouse in Alexandria, Va., Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

What you need to know before Paul Manafort’s trial
Giuliani said he and Jay Sekulow, another Trump lawyer, had told the president: "This would be a very bad thing to do now". That leaves Manafort, 69, facing charges that could keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.

"If the informant is on the stand, then the defense is going to go after him", Cohen said. Prosecutors say he earned at least $60 million working for the Kremlin-backed former leader of Ukraine, Viktor Yanukovych.

John Cohen, a former acting undersecretary at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and current ABC News consultant, said prosecutors may be responding to the defense strategy by minimizing the role Gates would play as a key informant in their case. Gates is the one who should be in the defendant's chair - not Manafort. But Assistant U.S. Attorney Uzo Asonye told Ellis in court Wednesday that Gates may not testify.

"The defense's main objective is to put a lot of things out there and have someone grab onto it or gravitate towards it as a reason why someone couldn't have done something or didn't do something intentionally", Thorn said. He once spent more than $400,000 in a single year on high-end clothing.

"The brown is python, for Mrs. Manafort", the elder Katzman said of a picture of the brown leather jacket that the feds entered into evidence Wednesday.

Ellis said there are invoices to show that, and that the photos were not necessary.

"The government doesn't want to prosecute someone because they wear nice clothes do they?"

So, said Eig, they told jurors about the French underwear he wore, expensive suits that were specially made with pockets large enough to carry a gun, and really big bills from the butcher shop he racked up.

The potential bombshell, the actual evidence of illegal activity that sinks Manafort, would come later.

So they were forced to pursue a lesser charge of tax evasion and got a sentence of 11 years in federal prison.

"It isn't a crime to have a lot of money and be profligate in your spending", U.S. District Judge T.S. Ellis III said. Ellis curtly asked at one point on Wednesday. That's roughly half the amount of time the prosecutors originally said the trial would take. They suggested that some of the foreign transfers could have been authorized by Gates.
