Lewis Hamilton dominates the Hungarian Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel in action for Ferrari

We've got a long, long way still to go and there's still nine or 10 races.

Seven-time world champion Schumacher snr suffered head injuries while skiing in 2013 and hasn't been seen in public since.

The result meant Hamilton strengthened his grip on the lead of the championship, with his advantage over Vettel now at 24 points. It looked like Mercedes was likely to secure a 1-2 finish, but Vettel passed Bottas in the latter part of the race.

'But the rear tyres started to die.

The biggest task for Mercedes was to keep the Ferrari's behind them coming out of the first corner. The Australian pitted, finally, after 44 laps, switching to ultras.

After looking in control in second place, a masterclass in defensive driving, it all went wrong for Bottas when he was clipped by Sebastian Vettel causing serious damage to his front wing. It would have been close.

Chris Froome’s climb and punishment as Geraint Thomas rises in Sky
This means Tom Dumoulin moves into second place to split the two Sky riders, Thomas and Froome, on the podium. The events of stage 16 did highlight again, though, just how vulnerable the riders are.

Bottas put his prang with Vettel down to a racing incident and felt there was little he could have done to avoid the crash with Ricciardo. He has won four out of the five Drivers' Championships and finished second in the remaining season where he was narrowly beaten by his rival teammate Nico Rosberg. But a clumsy pit stop brought the German back out in third place behind Bottas. However, they stopped early to cover off Kimi Raikkonen.

Lining up in fourth place on the grid, Vettel grabbed third from Raikkonen immediately but could not find a way past Bottas, who slotted in behind Hamilton as a defence against the red threat.

Vettel hopes points will flow freely, once glitches are ironed out.

"The second half of the season is always intense, but it is usually when it gets a bit better on our side", he said, referring to his Mercedes team, in the aftermath of their polished triumph at the Hungaroring. "Then, it is hard to foresee the traffic and knowing how well you go through it or not. So I'm quite confident with what's in the pipeline". Honestly I'm really happy because we knew that with Toro Rosso, two, three times in the year you have big opportunities like this where the vehicle works better than expected, things come your way. "I think we could have gone with Lewis today with the race pace", Vetel said.

"And the worst that can happen is that you come in earlier, you gain the position and then you fall apart at the end". You don't want to do that. Surely, that didn't help. Without that it would have been a much more relaxed last part of the race, probably hunting down Lewis. "I think our work ethic has been very strong and the team morale is better than ever and the spirit is better than ever". I just feel sad for Valtteri. The two Mercedes, Hamilton and Bottas lead the way. "I wasn't sure what was going on", Vettel said. Vettel takes the lead.

But Vettel believes Ferrari probably made the correct call with the information it had available at the time.
