Moment man is pulled alive from rubble in quake-hit Lombok

Hospital patients and relatives wait outside after being evacuated after an earthquake rocked Indonesia's Lombok island in Mataram

The death toll from a powerful natural disaster on the Indonesian island of Lombok rose to 105 on Tuesday as rescuers clawed through the rubble of homes, schools and mosques for survivors and evacuees faced another night in the open.

Salama, 52, was at a prayer class in the mosque of Karangpangsor village when the 6.9-magnitude quake struck the tropical holiday island on Sunday evening, killing more than 100 people and leaving thousands homeless as buildings collapsed.

The death toll since the 6.9 magnitude quake on Sunday has reached 98, including two on the neighboring island of Bali, and officials expect it to rise.

Rescuers have found three bodies and also managed to pull one man alive from the twisted wreckage.

"You're safe, mister", says one of the soldiers as emotion overcomes the man, clad in Islamic robes, and villagers crowd around him. Four agencies, including the military and the national search and rescue agency, were involved in the evacuation.

Electricity remained cut off in heavily affected areas yesterday, while telecommunications networks were not working properly.

"It's taking far too long", said 50-year-old Masini, the victim's brother-in-law who watched more than a dozen helmeted emergency workers in orange jumpsuits drill into a thick layer of concrete.

There is a desperate search for survivors of a deadly quake in Indonesia.

Soldiers at the event were then seen running in different directions before the televised transmission was cut off. State television showed him cutting short a speech as hundreds of soldiers broke ranks and scattered.

Karnawati said the epicenter was on the northern slope of Mount Rinjani on the eastern part of the island and not far from the epicenter of last week's 6.4 magnitude quake that left 19 dead and more than 1,000 domestic and foreign hikers trapped on the mountain because the quake triggered a landslide that blocked the hiking routes.

Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's disaster mitigation agency (BNPB), said on Twitter rescuers were combing through rubble in their search for survivors.

Rescue efforts earlier were hampered by shallow waters, but rising sea waters have paved the way for nine ships to dock on Gili island.

He said the group already had been staying in tents after the July 29 quake, but now officials told them to return to Java. "Moreover, all shops and stalls there are closed, making the economy totally crippled". Nugroho said authorities had deployed three ships to evacuate people who were packed on the 16-square-kilometre beach.

It was the second deadly quake in a week to hit Lombok, a less-developed island compared with its more famous neighbor Bali, where the strong tremors caused panic and damaged buildings.

"It went through my mind should we just crawl under something but I wasn't sure the building was going to hold up, and I thought, (let's) take a chance and leave", he said, adding that no one in the Singapore delegation was hurt.

Lombok airport's general manager said airlines had been laying on extra flights since yesterday and that his staff had been providing stranded passengers with blankets and snacks. Many hotels closed because of damage but some allowed travellers to camp in their lobbies.
