Pres. Trump 'looking into' 3D guns issue

3D printed guns generally fall apart after a couple of shots

The settlement allows Defense Distributed to start posting the blueprints online Wednesday, but as of Sunday, 1,000 people had already downloaded the plans for AR-15-style, semi-automatic assault rifles, according to Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro.

The restraining order issued by US District Judge Robert Lasnik puts that on hold for now.

In 2013 Defense Distributed posted downloadable files of 3-D printer designs of a one-shot pistol called the Liberator to its website, Defcad.com. "Under federal law it would be illegal to build a gun that's undetectable", he said.

Also today, Attorney General Grewal joined 20 other state attorneys general in a letter criticizing Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Attorney General Jeff Sessions for settling the federal lawsuit against Defense Distributed and urging them to withdraw from the settlement before the company publishes the computer files later this week.

In a statement, Mr Ferguson said: "These downloadable guns are unregistered and very hard to detect, even with metal detectors, and will be available to anyone regardless of age, mental health or criminal history".

The Trump administration issued a decision in June that allows for the online publishing of instructions for 3D-printed guns.

President Donald Trump says he is consulting with the National Rifle Association over whether it makes sense for a Texas company to publish downloadable blueprints for a 3D-printed gun.

Defense Distributed's files include 3-D printable blueprints for components that would go into the making of a version of the AR-15 semi-automatic assault rifle, a weapon that has been used in many United States mass shootings.

US President Donald Trump

Ferguson sued the administration over the decision Monday, prompting Judge Lasnik's restraining order Tuesday. They enable anyone with a 3-D printer to make the parts of a plastic gun that would cost just a few hundred dollars. The administration had agreed to reverse an Obama-era ruling that offering blueprints for 3D-printed weapons violated export rules.

Eric Soskin, a lawyer for the US State Department, told the judge on Tuesday that the government's role in the case was that of a bystander.

They are often called "ghost guns" because it's possible for people to make their own firearm without the serial number which allows cops to trace them.

Additionally, 21 Attorneys General are asking the State Department and the Department of Justice to block the 3D weapon plans from appearing online. "Already spoke to NRA, doesn't seem to make much sense!" the President tweeted Tuesday, without offering further details about what he'll do about the weapons.

But while that particular case is high-profile, Washington Free Beacon reporter Stephen Gutowski points out that gun blueprints have always been legally available for law-abiding Americans.

It led the US State Department to order them to be removed from the internet.

Democratic senators said at a news conference that Trump has the power to stop the company from making downloadable plans available online. Wilson sued in 2015, claiming the order infringed on his constitutional rights.
