Tories To Investigate Boris Over Burka Comments

Boris Johnson burka comment

Former UK foreign secretary Boris Johnson reportedly faces a Conservative Party investigation after refusing to apologise for ridiculing women who wear the niqab as looking like "letter boxes" and "bank robbers".

Johnson, who resigned last month over the Chequers Brexit deal, prompting an outcry from other politicians and Muslim groups with his comments.

He should not have used it, ' the prime minister said.

Speaking to the Telegraph, she said: "If you use the analogy of Christianity, would you ever write in the Telegraph that you should have a debate about banning Christians from wearing crucifixes?"

In the first instance, Johnson - a leading figure of in the campaign to Leave the European Union - will be scrutinised by a party investigator.

"The code of conduct process is strictly confidential", said a Conservative Party spokesman. May acknowledged that Johnson's comments had "clearly caused offence".

Writing in the Daily Telegraph on Monday, Britain's one-time top diplomat said women wearing the burqa looked like "letter-boxes" or "bank robbers".

"If you say that it is weird and bullying to expect women to cover their faces, then I totally agree - and I would add that I can find no scriptural authority for the practice in the Koran".

It is not clear if the meeting scheduled for Tuesday afternoon will still hold after today's turn of events. Osinbajo is acting president for Buhari, who last week left for a 10-day holiday in Britain.

The former foreign secretary has faced a storm of criticism, with Theresa May calling on him to apologise.

David Lammy, a member of the opposition Labour Party, called Johnson a dime-store version of President Trump and said he was "fanning the flames of Islamophobia" for political gain.

"Yet another privileged middle-aged bloke telling women what they can and can't wear".

Some suspected Johnson's burqa comments were meant to boost his appeal among right-wing members of the party.

Mr Jatras also told talkRADIO the "bigger question" surrounding Mr Johnson's remarks was Brexit.

"It's ridiculous these views are being attacked - we mustn't fall into the trap of shutting down the debate on hard issues", the source said.

It said Islamophobia was "heavily gendered" with white men carrying out nearly three quarters of verified incidents past year, while Muslim women made up more than half of victims. She said she welcomed an investigation, "but let's not pretend this is an isolated incident".
