Tourist plane crashes in Swiss Alps, 20 dead

The plane crashed in a forest near Hergiswil

All 20 people overseas a German-made Ju-52 plane were killed when the WWII-era aircraft crashed in the Alps, Swiss authorities said on Sunday.

There were 11 men and nine women aboard, including an Austrian couple and their son, she said.

The plane appears to have hit the ground near-vertically and at "relatively high speed", according to Daniel Knecht of the Swiss Transportation Safety Investigation Board.

Mr Knecht said the vintage plane presumably did not have the crash-resistant cockpit voice and data recorders that more modern aircraft have.

More than 1000 homes destroyed as Carr Fire rages on in California
In June and July, 29 people from Kansas worked a combined 6,646 hours as wildfires exploded in the western United States. The area remains closed to residents as crews work to restore some of the infrastructure in the area.

JU-Air said on its website that it was "deeply saddened" and its "thoughts were with the passengers, the crew and families and friends of the victims".

Almost 5,000 Ju-52 planes, a product of Germany's Junkers, were manufactured between 1932 and 1952. The mountainous area in southeastern Switzerland is popular with hikers and skiers and includes a glacier.

The aircraft belongs to JU-Air, a company with links to the Swiss air force, the ATS news agency reported.

The Junker JU52 HB-HOT aircraft was built in Germany in 1939 and is now a collectors' item. There was no immediate word on casualties.
